We evaluated the feasibility of a cargo consolidation and distribution facility as part of the Port of Anchorage expansion. The facility would accept shipments bound for western Alaska and consolidate them for regular barge service out of Anchorage. Interviews with potential users and transportation companies were used to estimate the volumes of cargo that would be sent annually, the potential cost savings, and strategic and marketing considerations if the concept is carried forward. This work took place in 2005–2006.
